Hell’s Paradise is where you’ll find the most incredible characters in all of anime. There’s no shortage of lethal assassins and swordsmen who can slice through anything.
Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a series that doesn’t shy away from ruthless characters, and only the toughest survive in its world. So, I’ve created a list of the top 20 strongest characters in the show.
Each of these characters has a unique fighting style and mind-blowing abilities. Some rely on pure brute force and raw strength, while others are all about outsmarting their opponents with cunning tactics and manipulative powers.
This page contains spoilers from Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku (Anime and Manga.
This girl is agile as hell and has reflexes faster than a cheetah. She dodged a direct attack from Zhu Jin, and impressed him with her speed.
Even as a kid, Nurugai had the skills to survive a massacre of death row criminals. And not only that, she became one of the few in a thousand years to make it through the hellish ordeals of Kotaku.
Before facing the death sentence, she got roped into joining an expedition team. They sent her and a bunch of other death row convicts on a crazy mission to find the Elixir of Life for the shogun.
This dude was one cool cat. He had a sharp mind, always thinking rationally and making sound judgments. He couldn’t stand anything that seemed unscientific, pointless, or just plain illogical.
Fuchi was the ninth-ranked Asaemon, which meant he was one of the big shots in the Yamada clan. He was a serious contender for the next leader position.
Instead of going for the kill, he’d wear down his enemies to squeeze out some juicy intel. He became one of the few in a thousand years to survive the crazy challenges of the island and make it to Horai.
Aza Toma is the badass little bro and sidekick of the infamous bandit Aza Chobei. The shogun assigned Toma as his Yamada Asaemon monitor, even though he wasn’t officially an Asaemon.
Toma trained like a boss under Gantetsusai and learned some mind-blowing Tao stuff from Gabimaru and Yuzuriha. He took down a bunch of Soshin dudes, who were hand-picked by Lord Tensen to take out any intruders.
He was holding his own against the Tensen guys and even managed to land severe blows, which he couldn’t do the first time they fought. Gantetsusai himself couldn’t handle the Tao lessons that Toma aced.
When the shogun got fed up with the first team’s slow progress in reaching the precious Elixir of Life, Isuzu got the call-up along with Kiyomaru. They joined forces with Shugen and Jikka to form the second team on the mission.
Despite her unranked status, Isuzu had some serious skills. Shugen himself vouched for her, and she got a gig as a Female Combat instructor under the shogun.
She even took down a group of Mōnshin, and Rien, no less, said that was far from normal for a human. She protected Shugen like a boss and even brought the highly skilled kunoichi Yuzuriha to her knees.
He’s the kind of guy who talks back to his superiors and even dared to order a ninja to off himself just to prove his loyalty. He’s also super arrogant and hates being looked down upon by others.
In fact, he cut off a ninja’s mask to flex his muscles and show Aoki that he was way stronger than anyone on the mission.
When it comes to swordsmanship, Kiyomaru is on another level. Despite his small size, he’s a master of spinning and rotating attacks. He’s got speed and precision that can take down a Mōnshin with just one swing of his sword.
Sagiri is all about duty and honor. She’s dedicated to being a samurai and an executioner, but here’s the thing – she’s got this mental block when it comes to taking a life. Her blade just can’t swing without a hint of fear or hesitation.
Sagiri earned her title as an Asaemon and even became the twelfth rank, positioning herself to be the next head of the clan. Gabimaru admires her because she embraces her doubts and fears instead of trying to overcome them.
It’s that acceptance that gives her the power to overcome any obstacle in her path.
Shion believes in following the rules of his era, even if they’re not always fair. If you give him a good reason, he will make exceptions to the rules.
Shion is a former fourth-ranked Asaemon, and the Yamada clan recognizes him as one of their strongest members. He survived the craziness of Kotaku, the deadly island that’s been a nightmare for over a thousand years.
On the outside, she seems friendly and carefree, just like your typical teenage girl. But don’t be fooled, my friends, because underneath that facade lies a solipsistic individual.
Yuzuriha is one skilled kunoichi, no doubt about it. She’s got a criminal record that landed her on death row, and boy, was she considered dangerous! She led a raid on Sagiwa Castle and took down every single retainer.
While all the other criminals were clueless about this thing called Tao or “ki,” she had complete conscious control over it. Even Gabimaru had no idea about it.
12. Tamiya Gantetsusai
He’s all about seeking out those strong opponents who can give him that adrenaline rush he craves. Even when he’s on the verge of collapse, he’s got a crazy smile on his face.
Gantetsusai is a powerful swordsman who’s widely known throughout Japan. During the raid in Horai, Gantetsusai proved his mettle by taking down Tao Fa, one of the powerful Tensen-level Sennin.
Plus, he played a crucial role in defeating the combined Kishikai of Ju Fa and Tao Fa. Talk about a force to be reckoned with!
11. Mu Dan
He’s a member of Lord Tensen and a ruler of Kotaku, and he has a chilling demeanor. And he’s not one to sugarcoat things either; he’s got a blunt way of speaking that’ll make you shudder.
As one of the rulers of Kotaku, Mu Dan can command the Doshi, Monshin, and Soshin like they’re his personal minions. His presence alone is enough to scare the pants off Yuzuriha, a tough kunoichi marked for death.
He moved so quickly that he caught Yuzuriha in the blink of an eye, even managing to sneak past Sagiri and Senta without them noticing. And he can crush stones with his bare hands!
Ran is all about loyalty, especially regarding his buddy Rien. He sees the Tensens as family and is as dedicated as they come. When he reunited with Mei, his long-lost sister, you could practically feel the joy radiating off him.
Ran is a total beast when it comes to combat. He outmatched Yuzuriha and Gabimaru with his skills and effortlessly defended against their attacks.
Yuzuriha had to give it her all to stop him, and even then, he pushed her to the edge of her limits. Ran was out for blood, and he almost got what he wanted.
9. Tao Fa
Tao Fa always has a smile on her face, like she’s never had a bad day in her life. It’s quite a contrast to her partner, Ju Fa, who’s all grumpy and serious.
Tao Fa can give skilled swordsmen like Tamiya Gantetsusai and Yamada Asaemon Fuchi a run for their money without even breaking a sweat. When she merges with Ju Fa and enters their Kishikai state, things get even crazier.
She unleashes her true power and goes all-out against Gantetsusai, Fuchi, and even the Aza brothers. As a Tensen-class Sennin and a ruler of Kotaku, she’s got authority over almost everything and everyone on that crazy island.
8. Ju Fa
This guy has a serious temper problem; anything that even slightly irritates him sets him off. He’s not one to hold back, either. He destroyed Zhu Jin’s head just because they let a human get the upper hand.
When Ju Fa merges with Tao Fa and enters their Kishikai state, he unleashes his true power. He goes all out against the Aza brothers, Tamiya Gantetsusai, and even Yamada Asaemon Fuchi, the ninth-ranked swordsman of the Yamada clan.
Despite all this rage, Ju Fa’s got a soft spot for his partner, Tao Fa. He’s been protecting her since they were little, and he can’t stand seeing her get hurt.
He sees himself as a pawn for his master and sticks to the mission like glue. Nothing else matters to him, not even his ninja buddies. When Kiyomaru ordered Kumokiri to off himself, Shija didn’t even bat an eye.
Shija is a true Iwagakure shinobi through and through. He’s been chosen as the potential successor to the legendary Gabimaru the Hollow. Iwagakure recognizes him as their strongest shinobi, and that’s no small feat.
Even though Shija isn’t a Tao user, he can hold his own against Rien, the most formidable member of Lord Tensen. He snatched the Elixir of Life from her without breaking a sweat. Gabimaru admitted that if it weren’t for his regeneration abilities, Shija might have taken him down.
6. Zhu Jin
Zhu Jin is the epitome of unenthusiasm. This guy always looks bored out of his mind, and it’s written all over his face. His lackadaisical attitude gets him into lots of trouble.
When facing strong opponents, Zhu Lin is so sloppy that he has to rely on his Kishikai abilities to fix his mistakes. But he’s still one of the strongest beings. With his god-like powers, he can outclass anyone in his path.
In fact, Zhu Jin almost had Gabimaru’s life in his hands if it weren’t for Mei stepping in. Seeing him in action made Gabimaru realize how formidable Lord Tensen truly is.
Compared to his fellow clan members, especially Shugen, this guy takes a more relaxed approach to his work. He’s all about patience, believing everything will fall into place as long as he stays chill.
As the third-ranked Asaemon, Jikka is no slouch. The Yamada clan sees him as one of their strongest members. He took down a Wadatsumi and managed to escape Kotaku alive, becoming the first person ever to do it unscathed.
Even Gantetsusai, the master swordsman, was impressed. He saw Jikka effortlessly slice through the Zhu Jin-fused Banko and declared him a potential God Slayer.
4. Aza Chobei
Chobei is a ruthless rebel who lives life on his own terms. He’d rather give the Doshi a good beating than settle things peacefully. He quickly figured out how to manipulate Tao right after awakening it.
When it comes to fights, Chobei is as sadistic as they come. He relishes in the pain and suffering of his opponents. Yet, he’s fiercely protective of his younger brother Toma, going to great lengths to keep him safe.
And let’s not forget his epic battle with Ju Fa and Tao Fa. With his brother, Chobei fought them in their Kishikai form, and boy, did they give them a run for their money.
Shugen takes his job as an executioner seriously and wears that Asaemon title with pride. What sets Shugen apart is his genuine care for his comrades. He’s a progressive guy who sees talent where others see gender.
When it comes to strength, Shugen is the cream of the crop. His fellow Asaemon look up to him as the strongest of the bunch. He took on a group of Sōshin without using his sword and went head-to-head with a Dōshi.
Shugen never saw eye-to-eye with Jikka. His lack of dignity really rubbed Shugen the wrong way. The Yamada clan couldn’t ask for a more dedicated Asaemon, and I’m rooting for him all the way!
Gabimaru is the epitome of coolness and indifference. Even when facing death sentences or going up against notorious criminals, he’s just like, “Meh, whatever.”
Gabimaru is a prodigy, a shinobi extraordinaire. He showed off his raw talent even as a kid and survived deadly training regimens in Iwagakure. He’s known as the strongest “Gabimaru the Hollow,” and people from all ninja villages fear and admire him.
He survived a massacre of death row criminals with his hands tied. He took on 54 Iwagakure shinobi sent to kill him, and none of them could lay a scratch on him except Shija.
Rien is so focused on reviving her late husband, Jofuku, that she’s willing to do anything, even if it costs her humanity. She’s been waiting for centuries, enduring countless failures with the Banko, just to see her goal through.
Rein is the strongest character in Hell’s Paradise, unrivaled by any other mortal. As a Tensen, Rien has otherworldly abilities that make even the other Sennin look like amateurs. With a flick of her finger, she can turn superhumans like Chobei into puddles.
Jikka concluded there was no possible way to defeat Rien, even if he and his crew fought her 10,000 times. Going against her is like fighting a boss battle that is impossible to win.
