The Stand picks up its pace in an episode that is crucially directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice and Cube). Although there are some minor changes to the source material, this episode has more tension than the midseason slump. It establishes the core concept of the story’s endgame, which is about challenging evil rather than hiding until it destroys us, and it also presents the horrific fates of two important characters. The four survivors of the Boulder blast head to Vegas to end the standoff, losing one. Nadine Cross continues her journey, leaving behind the doomed Harold Lauder once he has fulfilled his destiny to the Dark Man. He’s not finished with Nadine yet.
