The “Squid Game” series is expanding into a world, according to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. “Squid Game“, which Hwang Dong-hyuk created, wrote, and directed, has become a global hit and one of Netflix’s most popular programs of all time. Season 1 of the survival thriller follows 456 individuals from all walks of life as they compete in a series of children’s games for a chance to win a large sum of money.
“Squid Game“, starring Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun, has become a cultural sensation. Since the program’s premiere in September 2021, Netflix has released an official merchandising line, prominent YouTuber MrBeast has created a real-life “Squid Game” set, and the show has received multiple awards. Despite losing its top rank on Netflix’s ratings, “Squid Game” has retained its appeal and appears to be paving the way for Western K-drama translation. “Squid Game” season 2 and 3 are now being explored at Netflix, according to Dong-hyuk.
Netflix confirmed “Squid Game” season 2 is in the works, and teased a lot more for the survival drama series, according to Variety. Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO and Chief Content Officer, said “Squid Game” had been renewed for season 2 during the streaming service’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings call, adding, “The “Squid Game” world has just begun.”
For season 2, Jung-jae is anticipated to reprise his role as protagonist Seong Gi-hun. Season 1 of “Squid Game” concluded on an unclear note, with Gi-Hun opting to try to halt the next round of games rather than flying home to visit his family. However, Gi-return hun’s to the arena might go either way: he could re-enter the lethal competition to ruin the games, or he could become the new Front Man in a bizarre turn of events. For the time being, it appears that Netflix intends to expand the “Squid Game” plot outside the lethal arena.
Given the events of “Squid Game” season 1, it’s safe to assume that season 2 will have a totally new cast, with the exception of Jung-jae. Netflix has yet to announce a possible release date for season 2 at this time. Dong-hyuk spent a decade refining his concept for “Squid Game“, and it’s doubtful that Netflix will give him that much time to complete the second chapter. “Squid Game’s” fanbase loved it because it was so much more than a survival game plot, and it’ll be intriguing to watch how the series’ creators expand the “Squid Game” universe.
